How long are the consultations?

How long are the consultations?

Initial consultations are booked in for 1.5 hours to allow time to discuss your concerns, your needs and get to know your child. Following the initial assessment, you will receive a summary reprot.  Follow up consultations are booked in for 1 hour each. The frequency of your appointments will depend on a number of things, such as how far away you live, how the appointments fit into busy family life, and the goals that are to be acheived.

My doctor says my therapy is covered by Medicare. Is this true?

My doctor says my therapy is covered by Medicare. Is this true?

Yes and no! Medicare provides a rebate on therapy costs only if your doctor has placed you are on one of the following plans:

Chronic Disease Management Plan (also known as the EPC, Extended Care Plan). These plans are provided to people who have a complex situation, or a chronic sitauation that may last for more than six months. To find out if you are eligible, you need to talk to your doctor as they make the final decision. Once you are on the plan, you need to pay upfront for your consult with us, and then you may go to Medicare and claim a rebate for your therapy consult fee (for up to five consultations in a calendar year).  The current rebate amount is $52.95, so there will be an out of pocket expense for your appointments as well.

Better Access to Mental Health Plan.  These plans are provided to people who require intervention to improve their mental health.   The need for the plan is determined by your doctor.  The Better Access to Mental Health Plan allows for a Medicare rebate for up to 10 individual and 10 group therapy sessions per calendar year.  The rebate from Medicare is approximately $74.80.  Interventions that can be approved under this plan include: cognitive training, relaxation strategies, problem solving skill development, anger management, social skills training and stress and anxiety management.  Occupational therapists are trained in providing all of these, and must be a member of the Australian Occupational Therapy Association to bill under this Medicare plan.

I am in a private healthcare fund. Can I claim with them?

I am in a private healthcare fund. Can I claim with them?

Yes, we are registered with the health funds under Occupational Therapy for consultations. The level of rebate you get back will depend on your level of cover. Some funds also reimburse for equipment you might need, whilst others do not, so please check with your fund or talk to us if you have any concerns.

We have HICAPS facilities in our rooms, so you can claim for your consultation on the spot by presenting your health fund card.

What other funding is available for therapy?

What other funding is available for therapy?

Great question!  In addition to being able to claim on your private health fund or through Medicare, there is additional funding that is available.

Helping Children with Autism.  This funding is available through the Department of Families, Housing, Community Services and Indigenous Affairs (FAHCSIA).  To receive funding, you will need to obtain a Letter of Introduction from Autism Spectrum Australia (ASPECT).  More information is available through their website www.autismspectrum.org.au or through email on This email address is being protected from spambots. NDIS. The National Disability Insurance Scheme is rolling out in Wagga Wagga in July 2017 - that is not far away!  This scheme supports children with a permanent and significant disability which affects their ability to take part in everyday activities.  The NDIS will fund occupational therapy services for children who meet the criteria.  To see if your child is eligible, please visit the NDIS website at www.ndis.gov.au or email at This email address is being protected from spambots. Do I need a referral?

Do I need a referral?

Families and care givers who want to refer themselves are welcome to do so, and do not need a referral. If you are wanting to claim through any Medicare plans, you will need a doctor referral for this.  If you are a school teacher, health professional, or case worker, and would like to refer, a simple letter is welcomed, or you may use the referral form here.

My child gets anxious alot, how can you help?

My child gets anxious alot, how can you help?

Our therapists are trained to treat a number of mental health concerns, and anxiety is one of these.  Anxiety can be either innate (you are born with a tendency to be anxious) or it can be learnt over time.  Without strategies, anxiety can interfere with a child's ability to engage in their roles at school, at home and in the community.  Occupational therapy is a great option for managing anxiety.  We provide individual strategies for children and help to apply these to lots of everyday tasks to ensure success, and development of resilience.
